Rather than wait for the Monday blurb, these two items are worth posting today.
First up, The Town FC plans to field a WPSL club in addition to the rumored MLS Next Pro team. Already they have collaborated with Earthquakes II with several friendlies/scrimmages since last year and recently hosting their match against Austin FC II.
Doug at Soccer Bay Area has his take on this announcement.
The Town FC will join WPSL Pro on league debut in 2025
Also something of intrigue in which San Francisco is seeking to turn a major parcel of downtown into a soccer specific stadium. While this has been dismissed as a pipe dream given the current social and political issues in San Francisco the architectural firm Gensler has been brought in to design the venue. The same company is also responsible for LAFC’s stadium design. (Disclosure: the author/editor of this site was an employee with the firm back in 2000.)
Garrett Leahy, Eddie Sun, and Kevin Truong at the San Francisco Standard have the news on this longshot project. This may not happen unless MLS ends up expanding to possibly 40 clubs and splitting into two tiers implementing promotion/relegation. Again, our editorial take is this is the preferred route.
