In their third Bay Area appearance in as many years, and their first visit to PayPal Park in almost two years to the day of their last match–the teams from Guadalajara did not disappoint as supporters from both sides of the aisle rallied behind their team in the Tapatio Derby. Although Chivas fans outnumbered Atlas supporters the game was a spirited friendly as the team known as the “goats” and their vertical red and black jerseys defeated their crosstown rivals 2-0. Their previous appearances, one at Levi’s Stadium and the other at PayPal Park were marked by losses by 1-0 in a Leagues Cup match against the Quakes and a 2-1 defeat to Pachuca in a friendly.
The match was another homecoming of sorts as Cade Cowell returned to PayPal Park in his first appearance since being transferred to Chivas from the Quakes last year. However, there is a family member working up the Quakes ladder as his younger brother Chance recently signed with the team as a homegrown player like his sibling beforehand and is currently assigned to the second team The Town FC.
