This Week 9-23-24

Our coverage was in San Jose Friday for Bay FC and Saturday for the Quakes.  There was a match Sunday at St. Mary’s College in Moraga for The Town FC.

Doug at Soccer Bay Area has the summary of Bay FC’s loss to Orlando in which the home team almost stole a point, possibly three, from the top team in the NWSL.  It was Barbara Banda’s goal late in the game that made the home team end up with zero to show despite a stellar defensive effort.

The Quakes draw away against Seattle 2-2 on Wednesday but lose 2-1 at home against St. Louis. They head to Canada this weekend to face Montreal.

Soccer Bay Area and The Roots Blog have their analysis on the team’s loss to Hartford on the road.

Oakland Roots suffer third straight loss in 2-nil defeat at Hartford Athletic

One more from the lower leagues where Rush Silicon Valley and Club Tepa from South San Francisco draw even at 2-2 in a NISA Nation match in San Jose. After the conclusion of the Quakes and Bay FC season we will be on that beat for select matches.

The Town FC v St Louis City 2

The Town FC win 2-0 over the St Louis second team at St. Mary’s College in Moraga.  Goals by Julian Donnery in the 69th minute and Cruz Medina in the 80th were enough to secure another home victory.  The win clinched a playoff spot with two games remaining.  Goalkeeper Emmanuel Ochoa earned his fifth shutout of the year with one save.

The Town FC will play their last home game against LAFC 2 on Sunday September 29 at 5:30pm while St. Louis 2 continue their road trip to Southern California against the former Los Dos/LA Galaxy 2 in Ventura County FC on the same day 7pm start.

Quakes v St Louis City

In a matchup between two teams having dismal seasons, the Quakes attempt to make a comeback from a 2 goal deficit but fall short losing 2 to 1.  Cedric Teuchert scored early for the visitors with his 4th minute goal with Marcel Hartel adding another nine minutes later.  Jeremy Ebobisse gave the Quakes their tally with his goal in the 40th minute but that was all.

Next up for the Quakes is a road trip to Quebec to face Canadian MLS cup Montreal on Saturday Setpember 28 at 4:30pm while St. Louis return home to face rival Sporting Kansas City on the same day, 5:30pm start.

Bay FC v Orlando Pride

The teams played to a scoreless draw until Barbra Banda scored in the 84th minute giving the visitors the lead and eventually the win.  The match also was a homecoming for Marta, who played for the previous Bay Area women’s professional team FC Gold Pride in 2010 and leading the club to a championship before folding at the end of that season.   The Brazilian legend will also retire at the end of this season, as this was her only appearance since the top flight returned here this year.

Plus a tribute to Marta, past and present:

With five games left in the schedule Bay FC are currently tied for the last spot (8th place 25 points -8 goal difference) with Racing Louisville (+1 goal difference).  However, they are outside of the playoff line with a lower goal differential despite having 8 wins compared to 6 for Louisville.   Their next game will be on the road at Seattle against the Reign on Sunday September 29 at 3pm.  Orlando will return home to face Houston on Saturday September 28 at 4:30pm.

This Week 9-16-24

For this week, only the news from San Jose and Oakland.

Bay FC get a 1-1 draw at North Carolina against the Courage thanks to an Asisat Oshoala goal early in the game–however it was the equalizer from Ashley Sanchez that gave the result. Doug at Soccer Bay Area has his article on the match.

Quakes v Minnesota

The Quakes lose a heartbreaker to Minnesota 2-1.   Bongokuhle Hlongwane scored two goals in the 9th and 63rd minute to account for the win.  Ousseni Bouda drew the Quakes even in the 33rd minute but it was not enough to hold on to the draw.

With the international break, the next games will be on Saturday September 14 with both teams on the road with the Quakes at Vancouver (7:30pm start) and Minnesota at St. Louis (5:30 pm start).

Bay FC v FC Barcelona

Before a crowd of 14,817 Bay FC hosted their second ever friendly, this time against the three time European champions FC Barcelona from Spain.  The match was very competitive with Bay FC opening up the scoring with a strike from Asisat Oshoala in the 18th minute.  Each team continued to trade goals with Kika Nazareth equalizing for the visitors three minutes later, Rachael Kundananji giving back the lead for the home team in the 32nd minute and Caroline Graham Hansen scoring three minutes later again to draw the game at 2-2.

It was the second half attack on FC Barcelona that gave them the lead when Mapi León curled the ball off a corner kick in the 68th minute.  Claudia Pina and Patri Guijarro provided insurance goals at stoppage time to give the team from Catalan a 5-2 win.
